Add and import inter-array cables

Use inter-array cables to connect assets within the wind farm, for example between wind turbines or between a wind turbine and a substation.

You can add cables manually or import multiple cables from a spreadsheet.

Before you start

Make sure the assets you want to connect already exist in the case.

When importing cables, asset names must match the existing asset names in the case.

Cable length is entered in metres.

Add an inter-array cable manually

When adding an inter-array cable manually, provide:

  • Cable name
  • Cable end A
  • Cable end B
  • Cable length, if known

You may also be able to provide additional information such as completion date or power capacity, depending on the case setup.

If no cable length is provided, the distance between the two connected assets is calculated automatically.

Import inter-array cables

When importing inter-array cables, you can map spreadsheet columns to the following fields.

Field Required Description
Identifier Optional Used to create the cable name.
Wind farm equipment A Conditional Existing asset connected to cable end A.
Wind farm equipment B Conditional Existing asset connected to cable end B.
Cable A latitude Conditional Latitude of cable end A.
Cable A longitude Conditional Longitude of cable end A.
Cable B latitude Conditional Latitude of cable end B.
Cable B longitude Conditional Longitude of cable end B.
Cable distance Optional Cable length in metres.
Completion date Optional Completion date for the cable.

How cable endpoints work

Each cable end must have a location.

A location can normally be provided in one of two ways:

  • Select an existing wind farm asset.
  • Provide latitude and longitude coordinates.

This means you can import cables using different combinations.

For example:

  • Asset A to Asset B
  • Asset A to coordinates at end B
  • Coordinates at end A to Asset B
  • Coordinates at both ends

When an existing asset is provided, its location is used for that cable end.

If coordinates are provided, both latitude and longitude should be included for that end.

Example: cable between two assets

Identifier Wind farm equipment A Wind farm equipment B Cable distance
IAC-01 WTG-01 WTG-02 850
IAC-02 WTG-02 WTG-03 920
IAC-03 WTG-03 OSS-01 1350

If the cable distance is left blank, the system calculates the distance between the two endpoints.

Example: cable using coordinates

Identifier Wind farm equipment A Cable B latitude Cable B longitude Cable distance
IAC-04 WTG-04 56.12345 7.45678 1100

In this example, cable end A uses the location of WTG-04 and cable end B uses the supplied coordinates.

Cable names

If an Identifier is provided, the imported cable is named using that identifier.

If no Identifier is provided, a cable name is generated automatically.

Using unique identifiers is recommended because it makes cables easier to find and review after import.

Cable distance

Cable distance is entered in metres.

For example:

  • 850 = 850 m
  • 1500 = 1.5 km
  • 12500 = 12.5 km

If cable distance is not provided, the system calculates a straight-line distance from the available endpoint locations.

Completion date

Completion date is optional.

Only map this field when completion-date information is available and relevant to your case.

Before importing

Check that:

  • All referenced assets already exist in the case.
  • Asset names in the spreadsheet match the names in the case.
  • Each cable has a valid location for both endpoints.
  • Latitude and longitude values are numeric.
  • Coordinate pairs contain both latitude and longitude.
  • Cable distance is in metres.
  • Cable identifiers are unique where possible.

Common import problems

An asset cannot be found

Check that the value in Wind farm equipment A or Wind farm equipment B exactly matches an existing asset name.

A cable is not created

Check that both cable ends have enough information to determine their locations.

For each end, provide either:

  • an existing asset, or
  • both latitude and longitude.

Cable length looks incorrect

Check that Cable distance is supplied in metres rather than kilometres.

For example, enter 2500 for a 2.5 km cable.

Coordinates are incorrect

Check that:

  • latitude and longitude have not been reversed
  • the coordinates use decimal degrees
  • both coordinates are included for the endpoint

Recommended spreadsheet structure

For asset-to-asset cables:

Identifier, Wind farm equipment A, Wind farm equipment B, Cable distance, Completion date

For cables with coordinate endpoints:

Identifier, Wind farm equipment A, Cable A latitude, Cable A longitude, Wind farm equipment B, Cable B latitude, Cable B longitude, Cable distance, Completion date

You only need to map the columns that apply to your data.
