Sort Gantt chart by date

Sort Gantt chart by date

When managing multiple work orders in your Gantt chart, you can control how tasks are displayed by changing the sort order. Sort the chart by start date, work order name, or priority to quickly find and organize your tasks in a way that works best for your planning needs.

What sorting options are available

You can sort your Gantt chart tasks using any of these three criteria:

Sort Option

Effect

Start Date

Tasks are arranged chronologically by their scheduled or actual start date (depending on your primary bar mode). This is the default view.

Name

Tasks are sorted alphabetically by work order name.

Priority

Tasks are sorted by priority level: Urgent, High, Medium, then Low.

How to change the sort order

To sort your Gantt chart:

    • Locate the Sort by dropdown menu in the toolbar at the top of the Gantt chart
    • Select your preferred sort option from the list:
      • Start Date (default)
      • Name
      • Priority
    • The chart immediately reorganizes to reflect your selection
    • Your choice is saved automatically and will be remembered the next time you access the Gantt chart

    How sorting affects your view

The sort order determines the vertical arrangement of tasks in the chart:

      • By Start Date: Early tasks appear at the top, later tasks below. This helps you see the project timeline at a glance and identify upcoming work.
      • By Name: Tasks listed alphabetically. Useful for finding specific work orders quickly or grouping similar names together.
      • By Priority: Urgent and High-priority tasks appear at the top. This helps you focus on critical work.

The sort order applies after any grouping you have selected. If you are grouping by asset, type, or work plan, tasks within each group will be sorted according to your chosen criteria.

    Limitations and considerations

      • Primary bar mode affects date sorting: When sorting by Start Date, the system uses the start date from your selected primary bar mode (Planned or Actual). If dates are not available for the primary mode, the system falls back to other available dates.
      • Grouping takes precedence: Sorting applies within each group. If you have applied grouping (for example, by Asset or Type), tasks are first organized by their group, then sorted within each group.
      • Manual scheduling overrides sorting: If you manually drag and reorder tasks in the chart using drag-and-drop, the sort order remains the saved preference, but visual positioning changes as you move tasks.
      • Read-only mode: In draft views, some interactions may be restricted, but sorting remains available.
