View planning drafts in the Gantt chart

Use planning drafts in the Gantt chart to review draft work orders before they are added to the live plan.

When you open a planning draft, the Gantt chart enters draft viewing mode. In this mode, you can review the draft schedule, compare draft work orders with existing planned work, and choose whether to show only draft items or show the draft together with the current plan.

Where to find it

Go to the Gantt planning view and open a planning draft.

When a draft is open:

  • The Gantt chart displays work orders from the selected draft.

  • A Draft only checkbox appears in the Gantt controls.

  • Some planning actions are disabled while you are viewing the draft.

What draft mode shows

Draft mode shows work orders that belong to the selected planning draft.

For each draft work order, the Gantt chart can display planning information such as:

  • Work order name

  • Work order ID

  • Work order type

  • Priority

  • Asset

  • Site

  • Work package

  • Required resources

  • Planned start date

  • Planned finish date

  • Earliest start date

  • Latest finish date

Draft work orders are shown as draft items so users can distinguish them from work orders that already belong to the live plan.

Use Draft only

Use the Draft only checkbox to control what appears in the Gantt chart while viewing a draft.

When Draft only is selected, the Gantt chart shows only work orders from the selected draft.

When Draft only is cleared, the Gantt chart shows the draft work orders together with the current planned work orders. Use this view to compare the draft plan with the existing plan before deciding whether to proceed with the draft.

Changing the Draft only checkbox refreshes the Gantt chart.

Actions that are not available in draft mode

Draft mode is designed for reviewing and comparing a draft plan. It is not intended for directly editing the schedule from the Gantt chart.

While viewing a draft, you cannot:

Action Draft mode behavior
Auto-schedule tasks The action is disabled.
Set a baseline The action is disabled.
Drag unplanned work orders into the Gantt chart The action is blocked.
Move or resize Gantt tasks The action is blocked.
Add dependencies The action is blocked.
Update dependencies The action is blocked.
Delete dependencies The action is blocked.

If you try to perform an action that is not available in draft mode, the Gantt chart shows a temporary warning message.

Dragging work orders while viewing a draft

In the regular Gantt planning view, users can drag work orders or work plans into the Gantt chart to schedule them.

When viewing a draft, this is not available. If you drag an item over the Gantt chart while a draft is open, the chart shows a warning. If you drop the item, the change is rejected.

To schedule work orders directly in the Gantt chart, exit the draft view and return to the regular planning view.

View and navigate the draft

You can still use the normal viewing and navigation controls while reviewing a draft.

Depending on your permissions and configuration, you can:

  • Change the Gantt time scale

  • Use the date picker

  • Zoom in or out

  • Change grouping and secondary grouping

  • Change sorting

  • Change primary and secondary bar display options

  • Adjust row density

  • Export the Gantt chart to PDF

These controls help you inspect the draft without changing the schedule.

Prerequisites and limitations

Before using draft mode in the Gantt chart, make sure that:

  • A planning draft has been created.

  • The draft contains work orders.

  • You have access to the Gantt planning view.

  • You have access to the planning draft you want to review.

Keep the following limitations in mind:

  • Draft mode is mainly for reviewing and comparing draft plans.

  • You cannot directly edit the draft schedule from the Gantt chart.

  • You cannot drag additional work orders into the Gantt chart while viewing a draft.

  • You cannot move or resize tasks while viewing a draft.

  • You cannot add, update, or delete dependencies while viewing a draft.

  • Dependency information for draft work orders may not be shown in the draft view.

Troubleshooting

I cannot drag a work order into the Gantt chart

You may be viewing a planning draft. Drag-and-drop scheduling is not available while viewing a draft.

To schedule work orders directly, exit the draft view and return to the regular planning view.

The Auto schedule or Set baseline action is disabled

These actions are disabled while viewing a draft. Draft mode is intended for review and comparison, not for making direct schedule changes from the Gantt chart.

I only see draft work orders and not the existing plan

The Draft only checkbox may be selected.

Clear Draft only to show the draft work orders together with the current planned work orders.

I do not see the Draft only checkbox

The Draft only checkbox only appears when you are viewing a planning draft. Open a planning draft from the Gantt planning view to use this option.
